Well here we are over the stateline & well & truly in Texas, everything is bigger down here. Texas is a law unto itself evident by the various signage & road configuration. And it is hot & dry, currently 97F as we sit here on the sheep truck motoring towards our base for the night....Amarillo.
We stopped at a few museums along the way, many of these small towns have their own Route 66 memorabilia museum. One of the pit stops had a Chugs booze store....Margarita's all round in the bus...
We were in the small town of Maclean that have restored many of their shop fronts to their former 66 peak day glory. We called into the Barbed Wire & Devil's rope museum....interestingly they had a map of Oz up on the wall, missing Tassie of course but hey they are allowed to do that cause this is Texas & do we really mind? I think not!
Lots of old original roads signs amid the bucketloads of barbed wire inspired stuff they say is a tribute to the stuff used by the good ol' American cowboy & prolly even to this day.
We stopped at Del Rancho diner for a sandwich that was ordered via a table phone....TRUTH...pics up later! Now this diner claim to have invented the steak sandwich back in 1964 by a Mr JR Holt. I'm thinking this could well be disputed by some.
Seems everyone lays claim to 'ownership' of Route 66...Cyrus Avery was one from these parts that claims the 2400 miles of tar.
Of the 178 miles of Old Route 66 across Texas about 150 miles remain for exploration.....from Texola, Oklahoma to Amarillo & from here west to the New Mexico line at Glenrio. We came through into Texas via Shamrock & had a wee stop at the old U-Drop-Inn which now houses the Chamber of Commerce.
Now listening to Glen Campbell belting out the Rhinestone Cowboy....when in Rome.....I get the distinct feeling that there won't be too much Rockin going on for the next few days...more like boot scootin.
The yellow rose of Texas......I'm thinking this tune is gunna hang around a while too!
Flat, dry & dusty with huge kick butt size cattle ranches but I ain't seeing sheep cause there all on this 'ere truck.
Now where else in the world would you see an advertisement like this....'Concealed Handgun License Class' only $75, come get yours on June 2nd from the U-Drop-Inn AKA Shamrock Chamber of Commerce.....Texas of course!
We are currently driving through the tornado belt....hope there are none of those suckers lingering.
Hoo Roo for now
